Do AB Belts Work?

man and woman wearing an abdominal beltThere’s a lot of skeptics out there that believe abdominal toning belts are just a scam. A big money grab by companies who are selling a pie in the sky dream that you can improve your abdominal strength and endurance using these devices.

Well I wanted to chime in here with my 2 cents, because I own one of these devices and use it frequently.

The biggest misconception about electric ab belts is in terms of what they can and cannot do. Ab belts aren’t designed to make you look like a fitness model, but no one is telling you that’s what they’ll do either.

Abdominal belts are sold and marketed as a device to strengthen and tone your abs, and that they do very well using clinically tested, proven and FDA cleared technology known as electronic muscle stimulation.

Where people get thrown off track is that these devices are not weight loss devices. Actually there are no “weight loss devices” unless you count a treadmill, stair master or rowing machine.

To lose weight you need to either eat fewer calories then your body needs so you burn off some of your fat stores as energy. Exercise to burn more calories then your body would just doing your regular routine through the day so you burn fat stores. Or do a combination of the two.

Most ab belt manufacturers, and I know the brand I have, tell you that to achieve optimal results you must follow a healthy diet routine and exercise regularly. This should be pretty obvious I feel though? I mean, a car manufacturer tells you that it’s has great fuel efficiency, but they don’t say you need to drive a certain way to achieve that. So we all end up driving down the highway at 70-75 MPH wondering why our fuel economy sucks right?

Ab belts are meant to tone, firm and define your abs. This they do well, so in my opinion ab belts do work. If you’re of the mind that an ab belt should help you lose weight, then you’re probably best saving your money since you won’t get the results you expect.

In my experience using an ab belt as part of an over all healthy lifestyle and exercise routine has helped me feel stronger in my core and achieve a flatter stomach. Now I also try to eat healthy and run several days a week. The ab belt is only one element of my over all routine.
